Uses

This is a catalog of the things I use on a regular basis and find value in.

Inspired by other /uses pages.

Hardware

  • MacBook Pro 14" M4 Max — I got this with 36GB of unified memory and it's insanely fast. It can comfortably handle my 200-400 open browser tabs without breaking a sweat.
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max — Recently switched from a Samsung S21 Ultra. Still getting used to Apple's way of doing things and dealing with some of their limitations.
    • One frustration is the Syncthing situation on iOS. The best option is Sushitrain, but it has its own limitations that make it less seamless than the Android experience.
  • reMarkable 2 — Love the e-ink display and the decent sized screen which is nice to write on.

Software

  • Codium — A clean OSS fork of VS Code without any telemetry. Unlike VS Code which has proprietary extensions that make switching harder, with Codium it's as simple as exporting a profile and importing it elsewhere.
  • Opencode — Can handle almost any provider, and while it still has some bugs, I love the CLI approach. It's usable on my VPS and iPhone via SSH, and the ACP provider lets me integrate it with other tools.
  • Ghostty — Great defaults out of the box and very performant. Just works.
  • Obsidian — Love the Zettelkasten approach to note-taking and the fact that all my notes are just markdown files. Also love that the editor is built on CodeMirror 6.
  • Syncthing — Continuous file synchronization across all my devices. On iOS I use Sushitrain which works well enough despite some limitations.
  • Edge — I hate it, but the text-to-speech is extremely good.
  • Rust — My language of choice for systems programming. The type system and borrow checker make it a joy to write correct, performant code.
